Hardly any buyers for family welfare schemes

Despite showing initial trends of improvement various family welfare schemes in Kashmir valley have failed to make impact on the ground owing to poor response from the general public and officials of the family welfare directorate.
A recent study conducted by the family welfare department has revealed that compared to Jammu, Kashmir division continue to fall back when it comes to adopting family welfare schemes.
According to the report in 2006-07 2.72 lakh pieces of contraceptive were distributed among people in Kashmir division against over 17.02 lakhs in the Jammu region.District Srinagar topped the chart in Kashmir division where maximum number of 67,258 condoms were distributed by the family welfare department. In Jammu region District Udhampur topped the list as 587060 condom pieces were distributed in 2006-07.
Those who used oral pills their number in the Kashmir division was over 48,000 against over one lakh in the Jammu region It was only in IUD insertion that the Kashmir division registered higher growth than the Jammu region as in case of the former over 18000 insertions were made during 2006-2007 against over 11,000 in case of the latter.
The number sterlisation operations were conducted on 7281 people in the Kashmir division against over 12000 in the Jammu region.As compared to males female continue to shoulder the burden of adopting family planning measures.
In Srinagar district 3804 women underwent sterlisation against 14 men despite enhancement in the amount sanctioned for those undergoing sterlaisation operations.
Health officials say, the trends in Kashmir are not very encouraging but situation is gradually improving on the ground. A senior health department official said that the department had organised public awareness camps to spread the message of family planning and improving health standards. We are receiving healthy response besides resistance from certain pockets, the health official said.
In Kargil,Kupwara and Anantnag not a single male had undergone sterlisation.It is only in Udhampur district which has recorded highest number of men having accepted sterlisation as during 2006-2007 170 males underwent sterlisation against 84 in Jammu,86 in Kathua,three in Rajouri and 13 in Poonch.
Official sources said that the Directorate of Health services has formulated a plan under which more family welfare camps would be organized in all the 22 districts in the state where incentives would be given to those who underwent sterlisation.Exhibitions would be held for explaining to women the harmless impact of taking oral pills for birth control.
