News Analysis
Enough is enough. The PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has crossed all limits of permissiveness and constitutional propriety, by suggesting that Pak currency be allowed to circulate in Jammu and Kashmir. After his daughter, Mehbooba Mufti advocating joint control and joint sovereignty of India and Pakistan over Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed suggestion for Indian and Pakistani currency to be allowed in circulation in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, is like a proverbial last straw on the camel's back. Mufti owes an explanation to the people at large in this state and the country as a whole whether he believes J&K to be a part of India or not. His suggestion of two currencies being legal tender in a state of the country alone, besides being impractical, unfeasible and wrought with the danger of putting the economy in the state into turmoil, also is tantamount to sedition, since it openly questions and violates the sovereignty of India over Jammu and Kashmir. His drawing parallel with the common currency prevailing in the countries under European Union, is to say the least, faulty. Since several sovereign states in the European Union have through an international treaty decided to have a common currency and not a particular state within the sovereign country is allowed to simultaneously use the currency of another country. India and Pakistan alone have the jurisdiction to take any decision in this regard and if the trade ties between the two take such a turn, where the common currency regime can be introduced, the same can be thought of. But no individual state, which is part of a sovereign state can be allowed to have such a system.
Any more tolerance and giving long rope to Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, his daughter and other leaders of their like, who moot suggestions and raise demands which go to compromise India's sovereignty, will prove disastrous for the Congress party and the UPA government in the country with Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's PDP being a coalition partner in the Congress led government in J&K. The time has come when the Congress party, in its own interest and credibility as a nationalist party, having full faith in the solidarity and unity of the country should throw the baggage of out and out separate and secessionist PDP from its back. The PDP must be kicked out of the ruling coalition in the state, even if the Congress government is turned into minority and seeking of fresh mandate from the electorates is necessitated. The elections to the state are already 5 to 6 months ahead and the same can be pre-poned. In that case the Chief Minister must dissolve the state assembly and request the Election Commission for holding of early elections in the state. Any more carrying on of the burden of the PDP, will cost the Congress dearly not only in this state but also in the country as a whole, with its opponents charging it of giving a long rope to a partner whose outburst and demands touch the margin of secessionism. Besides J&K, assembly elections are not far of in some other states of the country, with parliamentary elections also due after little over one year.
In fact it appears that the PDP has already decided to leave the coalition government ahead of the assembly elections and is embarking on these adventurous suggestions, to create conditions for the wrecking of the ruling coalition in this state. Realizing well that its vote bank and constituency is among the separatists and secessionists in Kashmir alone, the PDP has been embarking on a game plan to give a message that it is on the side of the anti India and secessionist elements in Kashmir and that its agenda is equidistance to India and Pakistan, rather is more inclined towards Pakistan or independent Kashmir than the state being part and parcel of India. It is for the Congress now to read the writing on the wall and take the lead and first step to part company with the PDP, who will prove it a bigger liability than the sky rocketing prices of essential commodities, in the forthcoming elections in this state and the country as a whole.
But what is a matter of more concern is that Indian nationality and country's solidarity is being kept hostage for accommodating a party whose policies, programmes and ideology is secessionist in nature and who, to win the elections in a part of the country is prepared to challenge country's sovereignty. Any tolerance of these suggestions of the PDP will set wrong precedents and examples and is feared to open a flood gate of secessionist feelings in the country.
