| Parents urge govt to check mal practices by schools | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Apr 17 Parents of school going children and those visiting coaching centres for tuition have urged the state government to check the malpractices of various school managements and tuition centres demanding hefty fee from students. According to parents various famous private schools in Jammu have been charging hefty fee and the state education department has failed to regulate the fee structure. Mushrooming of tuition centres is also adding to the miseries of parents of school going children as they are demanding hefty fee packages without any system of check. From time to time the state government authorities claim that they are keeping track of these money making centres but fail to discipline them. Parents are also unhappy with the fact that various schools have started issuing discharge certificates to students who appeared in 10 th class board examination even without waiting for their results. The school managements across Jammu region have been issuing discharge certificates to students as they feel these children have been performing below average and cannot bring laurels to the school. Parents are also angry with the fact that these school managements instead of suggesting solutions to improve the performance of children have been issuing them discharge certificates. "The school managements are setting a wrong example for their own children. On one hand they lay emphasis on personality development and on the other hand they are segregating children on the basis of marks obtained in an examination". "The schools should provide opportunity to the children to improve their performance .But the reverse is happening as they are only after money and treat students as customers", an angry parent whose child has been thrown out of the school said. "We are very worried, the school authorities last week called me to the school and handed me a discharge certificate of my son .The school principal informed me that my son has not secured enough percentage of marks in his pre-board examination and cannot be given admission in the school" ,Rajinder Gupta father of 10 class student Abhinav said. "we cannot admit students whose percentage falls below cut point average fixed by the school management, a senior school functionary of a famous school said defending their decision. "We are not working against the interest of the students.By segregating average students and brilliant students we are trying to help those who need it the most, a school teacher said. Meanwhile, rising prices have put additional burden on the parents as majority of schools and tuition centres have hiked their fees. Rathan Kumar, an exserviceman working privately as security officer said, "i am finding it difficult to meet the tuition expenses of my son.He said till last month my son was paying Rs 900 as tuition fee but now his teacher is demanding Rs 1100". |
