Further BBC- WST shall construct a radio studio at EMMRC, equipped with latest recording and post production gadgets which will be used for radio programming during the project and shall become the property of EMMRC after the project is over.
The news has brought joy over the faces of many a students presently studying at Media Education Research Center who feel the move will brighten their career prospects.
The project has started with the need assessment study for developing content for the trainers and augmenting the curriculum for development communication of the Department of the MERC.Sam Miller and Harpreet Kour representatives from BBC today had discussions with the faculty at both the departments; EMMRC and MERC University of Kashmir were the details regarding the final implementation of the project were discussed.
Later the two experts from BBC, along with project management team comprising Shahid Rasool Director EMMRC, Prof. M. Aslam HOD MERC and Dr. Salima Jan Research Scientist EMMRC called on the Vice Chancellor Prof Riyaz Punjabi and had over one and half hour meeting with him. During the meeting the Vice-Chancellor appreciated the BBC World Service trust for collaborating with the EMMRC for this
“critically important project” which, said VC, will go a long way in creating “capacity and culture for social affairs reporting that is on the decline due to various reasons”. This said Prof Riyaz Punjabi, VC KU, shall also create a much needed interface between the
university, the media and the society at large. The Vice chancellor stressed the need for carrying on the programme even after the project is over. This, felt VC, is required at the national level and is the need of the hour as the social issues have been relegated
to the back burner because other commercial, political and crime related issues are taking precedence over them. Earlier Director EMMRC Shahid Rasool briefed the Vice Chancellor about the aims and objectives of the collaboration project. Director EMMRC informed the VC that during the project period, BBC world service trust, with the
help of international trainers shall first train local trainers, which will include faculty of EMMRC, MERC and some local working journalists. The BBC and the local trainers, thereafter, shall train two batches of students of mass communication in social affairs reporting for Television, Radio and Print Media.
