| PM cancels rain-hit Orissa tour, returns to Delhi | | | Bhubaneswar, Aug 29 Heavy rains today forced Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to cut short his two-day visit to Orissa and return to New Delhi.
As rains continued to pound the capital city and most parts of the state, Singh and his entourage left for Delhi around noon cancelling his scheduled visit to Bolangir and Koraput districts.
The inclement weather had also caused the cancellation of his visit to Kaniha in Angul district yesterday where he was to dedicate a 3000 MW NTPC super thermal power station to the nation.
Singh had been scheduled to fly in a helicopter to Balangir and Koraput districts - part of the backward Koraput, Bolangir, Kalahandi (KBK) region - to see for himself the development achieved at the ground level and interact with people.
The Prime Minister was supposed to fly to Visakhapatnam today from where he would have taken off for New Delhi in the afternoon.
But continuing rains since yesterday in Bhubaneswar and also in Bolangir and Koraput districts put paid to his plans.
Governor Rameswar Thakur, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, several ministers and government officials saw the Prime Minister off at the Biju Patnaik airport in pouring rain. |
