| PMO reviews infrastructure projects in Punjab | | | New Delhi, Aug 29 As part of its efforts to bring about a quantum change in infrastructure in Punjab, the Centre has begun regularly monitoring various initiatives announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the state. The Prime Minister reviewed progress in the new initatives at a recent meeting. The infrastructure projects are being monitored by the PMO along with the Punjab governmet and concerned Central ministries and departments, an official release said today.
The initiatives include the Galiara project around Shri Harmandir Sahib, completion of Khalsa Heritage Project at Shri Anandpur Sahib, upgrading the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, the establishment of a bio-technology hub in Punjab and coverage of Amritsar and Ludhiana under the National Urban Renewal Mission.
Special attention is being given to upgrading and widening the Amritsar-Wagha road. The Amritsar-Jallandhar, Amritsar-Pathankot, Kiratpur-Chandigarh and Ambala-Chandigarh roads are also being taken up under the National Highway Development Programme.
The Ambala-Jallandhar and Ludhiana-Chandigarh roads were proposed to be made six-lane highways, while the high-speed railway corridor is being extended up to Ludhiana. Action is also being taken for setting up a new international airport in the state, the release said.
The Prime Minister has also taken several educational and social initiatives, foremost among them being the announcement of the Indian Institute of Science and Research in Punjab. The Centre of Research on Shri Guru Granth Sahib Studies has started functioning, the release said. |
