The former Union Minister and a senior leader of the BJP, Chaman Lal Gupta has impressed upon the State Governor and all other concerned to direct the State Government authorities to ensure early delimitation of Assembly segments for fair distribution of seats to each region and area which is a prerequisite for fair elections.
Interacting with the party activists from three districts of Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban, Prof. Gupta observed that the political fraud is being played with the region of Jammu for the past about sixty years now by denying due share of assembly seats to different areas. In this regard, he pointed out that strength of electorates of Kashmir valley as also that of Jammu region is almost equal and the geographical area of Jammu is nearly double than that of Kashmir but still Jammu has been allotted only 37 assembly and only two Lok Sabha seats against 46 assembly and three Lok Sabha seats to the valley.
This injustice is being perpetrated by the certain Kashmir based politicians with the support of Congress which has always been dual role, he alleged and questioned the Congress leadership that what they had done to rectify this wrong especially when it formed a part of the Congress manifesto as also it was included in the Common Minimum Programme chalked out at the time of formation of the present coalition government by setting up a delimitation commission.
The BJP leader accused the leadership of Congress, PDP and that of National Conference for having nexus to deny the due share of Assembly seats to each area.
The activists from the three districts of Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban pointed out that each district is having just two assembly seats whereas in the valley of Kashmir there is no district which is not having four to six assembly seats although the entire geographical area of the valley is almost equal to the area of these three districts. Moreover, these districts are farbackward and neglected than any of the area in the valley.
Gupta also said that by denying the fair distribution of assembly seats to each area making a mockery of the entire democratic process but also is extending injustice to the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes by not having the Delimitation Commission.
He said that it was sheer obnoxious move on part of the National Conference Government which had amended the state Constitution by taking the advantage of so-called Special status of Jammu and Kashmir and had put an embargo that there would be no change in the assembly seats on regional and other basis till 2026. But Congress is more guilty than even the NC and PDP which is maintaining silence on setting up Delimitation Commission for just distribution of seats which is necessary for fair elections and make the assembly truly represented.
At the meeting it was decided to take up this issue before the electorates and expose those parties which are instrumental for usurping the due rights of the people of different areas.
