| India need not be brow beaten by China | | | | In an opinion poll carried by an English newspaper of the country 94% of the people interviewed are of the opinion that UPA government bent over backwards for Beijing, while only 4% are not in agreement with the same. There is a general impression among the country people that the government of India is going too far to appease Beijing over the issue of the government of China's alleged reign of terror let loose in Tibet and concerted game plan to curb the internal autonomy of the autonomous region, going all out to annihilate the distinct identity of Tibetans, waging a war on their cultural heritage and identity and even interfering in the religious affairs of Buddhists in Tibet. An impression of India having been brow beaten by China, who has indulged in muscle flexing and warning India to keep its hands off Tibetan unrest against the Chinese government. While the Olympic torch rally during its journey through some countries was witness to disruption and protests by the Tibetans and their supporters in those countries, the government of India went all out of the way to cause hardships and inconvenience to its citizens to ensure smooth passage of the Olympic torch in country's capital. A very heavy contingent of police and paramilitary forces including the national security guard were deployed on the 2.5 km long route from where the torch was to be taken out. Though India has won the admiration of Beijing over this gesture but the same has been sharply criticized by the protagonists of freedom and safeguard of the rights of Tibetans, as well as of the common man in the capital who was put to all the hardships for the purpose. Providing necessary protection to the running of the torch through its territory is no doubt the international obligation of every country including India, with the Olympic games being hosted this year by China, the Tibetans as well as the supporters of the cause of the oppress Tibetans were within their right to hold peaceful demonstrations on the occasion to focus the attention of the world over the genocide and atrocities to which they are being subjected by the government of China. While the government in Delhi is justified in taking all permissible step to improve its relations with the neighbouring Asian country, which like India is on the thresh hold of becoming a super power, any neglect of the rights of the Tibetan, and turning blind eye to the sufferings being inflicted upon a race by India, who has close culture affinity with the Buddhists of Tibet, has hardly any justification. Besides a large number of Buddhists in Ladakh, the northern part of India, having close emotional and spiritual links with the Buddhists of Tibet, both regarding the Dalai Lama as their spiritual leader, about 1.5 lakh Buddhists in exile are having their home in India for last over 50 years. This aspect, together with India's strategic interest in the region need not be ignored. |
