Various Institutes celebrates World Earth day
Pledge to save Mother Earth from exploitation

The World Earth Day today brought renewed vigour among the environment lovers, uniting them under separate umbrellas and making them pledge once again to save mother earth from human exploitations.
The concept of celebrating the Earth Day originally was conceived by the Americans to make people aware of the reckless use of the natural resources which subsequently gave rise to environmental menace like water and air pollution and more alarmingly the depletion of the Ozone layer which is popularly termed as "the green house effect".
As the world population increased at an alarming rate, the need to save the eco system became a global concern and this is how the Earth Day celebration became the World Earth Day," said Former Principal Chief Conservative Forests and Chairman Environment Impact Assessment Authority. P. P. Sharma.
Keeping in mind the local environmental issues, the Children's Alliance for Protection of Environment, Shere Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology today celebrated the world Earth Day at its campus chatha.
About 400 students of various age groups from class Ist to 12th participated in the programme. A drawing competition was organized on the topic Sustainable Earth. The children efficiently painted their ideas of saving earth from ill effects of pisononous emission from various sources.
Vice Chancellor SKUAST, Prof. Nagendra Sharma, chief guest on the occasion stressed upon the need to educate students adopting various ways and means to save the earth,
The competition was adjudged by Dr. RD Gupta, BS Pure, Dr. J. Prabhakara, and Prof. MK Khushu.
Assosciate director Research of SKUAST_J, Deepak Kher underlined the need to celebrate the earth day.
On the occasion of World Earth Day, National Environment Awareness Campaign on the theme of Biodiversity Conservation was launched today. Former Principal Chief Conservative Forests and Chairman Environment Impact Assessment Authority. P. P.
Sharma presided over the function. About 80 persons representing prominent citizens, NGOs and representatives of Educational institutions participated. The function was organized by World Wide Fund for Nature India.
Chairperson V. P. Sharma gave brief historical background of the planet earth and the origin of life on it in a chronological order. On the occasion two books, one in Hindi entitled "Geet Paryavaran Ke" written by. O. P. Sharma were released. This was followed by a detailed lecture on Biodiversity conservation by Prof. K. C. Bhagat from SKUAST. He informed about the importance of biodiversity Conservation, causes of Biodiversity loss, its impact on environment and the role of community in biodiversity conservation. Dr. O. P Sharma delivered a detailed talk on biodiversity with special
reference to Jammu region. Awards to sixty participants comprising educational institutions and voluntary organizations of Jammu for the execution of NEAC 2007-08
were given away in the shape of cheques
Meanwhile Lalded Women Welfare Society (LWWS) organized a function to distributed gifts among the children which were provided by the Gospal Mission of India and Sumartan Purse.
The function was presided over by Santosh Basotra, Secretary of the society while Sheela Bhagat, Programme Officer, ICDS was the Chief Guest of the function.
A cultural programme was also performed by the students of different schools who were specially invited on the occasion besides a lecture on Environmental Sanitation was
delivered by Devinder Bakshi, Audio Visual Officer of Health Education Bureau, Directorate of Health Services, Jammu.
Others who attended the function included Suman Sharma, Vikram Shri Dhar, S. Rimple Singh, Sant Ram Bhagat, Suraj Parkash, Renu Nagotra, and Anju Gupta
"Though the 'back to nature' ideology is the buzz word these days, keeping in view the trappings of civilisation and population pressure, human beings will always be dependent on mother earth for her renewable and unrenewable resources which brings us to adhere to the principle of sustainable development, said Prof. K. C. Bhagat from SKUAST.
