| 'Lady James Bond' from Kashmir? | | Punjab police claim doesn't find many takers | | SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT NEW DELHI, AUG. 29: Intelligence Bureau (IB) is reported to have rubbished the claim of Punjab police that a 'Lady James Bond' from Kashmir is on the prowl and that she could prove to be deadlier than terror operatives trained in Pakistan. According to the Punjab police, she is a pretty and demure-looking Irafata, a Kashmiri woman in her 20s. Much is not known to the Punjab police about the Kashmiri 'Lady James Bond'. Yet, she is high on the Punjab police wanted list. On this August 20 the Irafata story began, with the arrest of four suspected Hizbul Mujahideen operatives in Madhopur near Pathankot. This was followed by the circulation of reports from Pathankot that 'Lady James Bond' , suspected to be involved in an aborted plot to blow up an Army base in Madhopur, had slipped through the police dragnet. The Punjab police had also claimed that she had the ability to capture images of the targeted installations from mini spy cameras in her ear rings or finger rings. Senior police officers of Gurdaspur district had, in a statement, claimed that the 'Lady James Bond' had surveyed several places and had taken pictures of potential Indian military targets.
Gopal Sharma, Director-General of Jammu and Kashmir police, was on Tuesday quoted by a Delhi-based journalist as having said on telephone from Srinagar: "I do not know which 'Lady James Bond' Punjab police is referring to. We have not heard of any such thing in the intelligence inputs that we receive on a daily basis". Gopal Sharma was reported to have stated that he had dispatched a team of J&K police to find out the truth about the so-called arrest.
At the same time, an unidentified senior officer of the Intelligence Bureau was quoted as saying: "It was nothing new. Punjab police is known for claiming to arrest terrorists even when the arrested people are mere carjackers or petty thieves. Four years ago, the same officer had claimed to have arrested dreaded militants. But when he came to know that his bluff has been called off, he amended his faults."
In Punjab there are times when house painters are picked up and passed off as terrorists before media persons. "The sketch of the 'lady James Bond' looks more imaginary. If you are to believe Punjab police, she gave them a slip while the men were arrested. Who will believe this cock and bull story," a top ranking Punjab police officer reportedly told the Delhi-based journalist. ================
