| CPI (M) stages protest in front of Raj Bhawan | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Apr 23 As per the ongoing week long national wide joint protest movement by the left parties and UNPA against relentless price hike, state unit of CPI (M) today has staged a protest dharna in front of Raj Bhawan. The CPI (M) has staged in front of Raj Bhawan under the chairmanship of Bishan Das, Communist leader. While addressing the Dharna, CPI (M) Regional Secretary Sham Prasad Kesar expressed grave concern at the continuing rise in the prices of essential commodities. He further said The prices of wheat, rice, edible oil, sugar and pulses etc. have increased by as much as 50 to 100 percent in this year and hitting hard the budget of the people at large. These include the willful neglect of Agriculture under the neo- liberal regime, under which the production of cereals, pulses, oil seeds and vegetables has stagnated, the weakening of the public procurement and virtual destruction of Public Distribution System and allowing domestic and foreign corporate players to freely procure and trade in food grain and other agricultural commodities, he added. Speakers accused that the UPA Govt. is not interested in reversing the decisions taken by the BJP led NDA Govt. in April 2003 to permit futures trading in agriculture commodities. The UPA Govt. has also refused to initiate any serious action against the hoarding of essential commodities by private players, they alleged. Jammu Regional Committee of CPI(M) demanded that the UPA Govt. to shed its neo- liberal approach and strengthen the Public Distribution System, Ban futures trading in 25 agricultural commodities as proposed by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on food, consumer affair and Public Distribution, cut customs and excise duties on oil and reduce retail prices of petrol and diesel, empower state governments to deal with hoarding and black-marketing. Among others who addressed the gathering include Kishore Kumar, Om Prakash, Banarsi Dass, Dharam Singh, Sohan Lal Sharma, VK Vaid and others. |
