| Two top HM Comndrs killed in North Kashmir | | Major among 4 injured, 5 houses damaged; Protests follows | | Early Times Reporter Baramulla | Apr 23 Massive protests rock North Kashmir's township of Barmaulla as tow top militants commanders were killed by army and police at Kwagabagh Baramulla in an encounter started during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. Meanwhile Deputy Inspector General (DIG) North Kashmir claimed that with killing District and Battalion Commanders, militancy has almost ended in North Kashmir. DIG Baramulla Dr. Srinivas told media person in briefing that police and army launched a joint operation after receiving specific information about presence of militants in a house at Hyder Mohlla Kowajbad on the outskirts of Baramulla town. The militant, he said, was hiding in the house of Constable Armed Police Mushtaq Ahmed Fafoo son of Abdul Razaq Fafoo of Hyder Mohlla Kwagabagh The troops zeroed in onto the house and asked the militants to surrender, he said adding, a party lead by one army Major accompanied by house owner and another civilian approached towards the interiors to negotiate but the holed up militants hurled grenades and fired upon them indiscriminately injuring the major and the two civilians. He further said that the fire was retaliated which ensued an encounter during which two top local militant Commanders of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) were killed. Identifying the two slain militants as District Commander Tanveer Ahmed Zagar son Ghulam Mustafa Zagar and Imtiyaz Ahmed Kahna of son Abdul Rashid Khan of old town Baramulla, Dr. Srinvas told News Agency of Kashmir that both of them were most wanted militants and it is a big success for security forces in North Kashmir. . According to him both the slain commander were responsible for militant activities and several killings including recant grenade attack at Fly over Srinagar. "The slain commander was wanted in the number of militancy related activities and his killing comes as a major blow to the outfit and is big success to security forces," said Dr. Srinivasan. Sources said that two civilians, one army major and a trooper were injured in the gunfight and five residential houses were also damaged in the encounter. Meanwhile massive protests rock Baramulla Township and the Kwagabagh areas as the local women and youth took to streets and staged strong protest demonstrations. The township wore deserted look and shops and other business establishments including government and private schools were closed after the protests. Protest continued in the township as the locals were asking for bodies of the two slain militants. Police and district administration was later forced to hand over the bodies, which were buried by a strong mob chanting anti-India slogans. |
