| HM gets penultimate blow: three top commanders dead | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Apr 23 In a massive summer chase against militants, the security forces today eliminated three top commanders of the Hizbul Mujahideen and killed two other ultras in two separate encounters. This is being seen as major set back to the pre-poll revival activities of the Hizbul Mujahideen and is a follow up to the killing of several top commanders in the past few months. In a joint operation, the Army and state Police gunned down a top militant commander of Hizbul Mujahideen at Kalian area of Mohar tehsil of Reasi district, while another militant of Jesh-e-Muhammad has been killed in Mendhar area of Poonch, Wednesday morning. Official sources said that Special Operation Group (SOG) of police and army, in a joint operation, inflicted heavy blow on Hizbul Mujahideen by killing a wanted militant in Reasi district. Identified as Abu Haq alias Jahangir son of Ismail Gujjar of thvroo Lasooli, the slain militant was a Battalion commander of Hizbul Mujahideen and was active since 1993, police said. On specific information about the presence of militant in Kalian area of Mahore, Reasi Police team headed by DySP Operation Tahir Ashraf under guidance of SSP Reasi and DIG Udhampur Alok Puri launched an operation in assistance with 61 RR and 182 Bn of BSF. "As the troops zeroed in the hideout, hiding militant opened indiscriminate fire in an attempt to escape", DySP Tahir Ashraf said. He said that troops took all precautions to avoid civilian causality and effectively returned the fire. In the ensuing gun battle the lone hide militant was gunned down, who was later identified as Battalion Commander of HM, added Ashraf. The militant, according to police, was involved in series of killings including a massacre of civilians in Parankote area of the district. This is the second major achievement of police in Reasi district after Killing Badshah Khan. Meanwhile, Jammu Kashmir police and 39 RR killed another militant commander in Navol Chattral area of Mendhar tehsil of Poonch district, this afternoon. The slain commander has been identified as Abu Umar of Pakistan and from his possession one Ak 47, 1 Pistol 2 Chinese grenades, ammunition besides PaK diary and Pakistani currency one hundred and eleven. In the Valley operation two top militants commanders were killed by army and police at Kwagabagh Baramulla in an encounter started during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) North Kashmir claimed that with killing District and Battalion Commanders, militancy has almost ended in North Kashmir. DIG Baramulla Dr. Srinivas told media person in briefing that police and army launched a joint operation after receiving specific information about presence of militants in a house at Hyder Mohlla Kowajbad on the outskirts of Baramulla town. The militant, he said, was hiding in the house of Constable Armed Police Mushtaq Ahmed Fafoo son of Abdul Razaq Fafoo of Hyder Mohlla Kwagabagh The troops zeroed in onto the house and asked the militants to surrender, he said adding, a party lead by one army Major accompanied by house owner and another civilian approached towards the interiors to negotiate but the holed up militants hurled grenades and fired upon them indiscriminately injuring the major and the two civilians. He further said that the fire was retaliated which ensued an encounter during which two top local militant Commanders of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) were killed. Identifying the two slain militants as District Commander Tanveer Ahmed Zagar son Ghulam Mustafa Zagar and Imtiyaz Ahmed Kahna of son Abdul Rashid Khan of old town Baramulla, Dr. Srinvas said that both of them were most wanted militants and it is a big success for security forces in North Kashmir. According to him both the slain commander were responsible for militant activities and several killings including recant grenade attack at Fly over Srinagar. "The slain commander was wanted in the number of militancy related activities and his killing comes as a major blow to the outfit and is big success to security forces," said Dr. Srinivasan. Sources said that two civilians, one army major and a trooper were injured in the gunfight and five residential houses were also damaged in the encounter. |
