As the non-functional ventilator in over-crowded Emergency ward of Government Medical College Hospital Jammu is threatening many lives, officials are planning to procure more `oxygen' for the hospital, which is being upgraded to AIMS level.
Sources said that only three ventilators out of seven were available in GMC as four of them were out of order and awaiting attention of the concerned authorities. "We are not able to meet the requirement due to heavy rush in the hospital and we have only three ventilators available with us", a senior doctors posted in the hospital told NAK, on the condition of anonymity.
He said that four ventilators were out of order from last more than a year and same has been sent for repairing. "One need to have high level approach to get his patient on ventilator in the hospital as the machines, used as artificial respiratory system, were on a very high demand", another doctor revealed.
The functioning of the primer health institution can also be gauged from the fact that not a single outlet of ventilator was available in the Emergency ward of the hospital, which is risking many lives.
A glaring example of how the doctors in the government run institution were filling the coffers of private hospitals came to surface when a twelve year old girl was referred to ASCOMS Jammu as ventilator was not available in the hospital.
Sources said that twelve year old Sujagya of Katra was rushed to GMC Jammu after she developed respiratory ailment. "The doctors categorically told us that the ventilator was not available in the hospital and suggested us to go to Batra hospital", father of the girl Ashwani Kumar told News Agency of Kashmir.
When contacted Principal Government Medical College, Dr Rajinder told however denied that the ventilators were non-functional. He said that health department is making all efforts to provide `more oxygen to the patients'
He told News Agency of Kashmir that the ventilator of emergency is out of order from some time and same has been sent for repairing, while others are in working condition. "The non-functional ventilator in emergency has been replaced with a working one", he added.
"We have only seven ventilators and it is very difficult to meet the requirement as for each ventilator we have to design the beds in such a way that it must have the arrangements for installation of the ventilator" he told NAK.
He informed that chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Ghulam Nabi Azad has recently allocated funds for purchasing six more ventilators, which will ease the pressure in the hospital.
"We are coming up with a separate 6 bedded mini ICU where in all the six ventilators would be installed", he said.
He said that it was not possible for the hospital to provide ventilators in emergency as only two beds have been designed with the infrastructure needed for the installation of the machine where as other ventilators are put in wards and ICU.
He admitted that due to the lack of infrastructure and increasing demand some patients are facing problems. However, he said that all possible efforts to cover up the requirement are being done.
He said that with in next three months GMC will have a full-flagged ICU unit for emergency patients. Adding he said, "Still we will not be able to keep patients on artificial respiratory system for more than a week as we have to take care of every such patient referred to this Hospital".
