| Four Islamic rebels shot dead in Indian Kashmir: police | | | Early Times Reporter

Indian security forces shot dead four senior rebels from the main Islamic militant group fighting to merge Indian Kashmir with Pakistan, police said Friday.
"The militants were killed in separate gunbattles in northern Kupwara and Southern Reasi districts," a police official said.
Two of those killed were identified as Mohammad Ramzan Reshi, deputy district commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, and his close associate Ghulam Mohiuddin Bhat, said police superintendent Haseeb Mughal.
"The duo were killed in a day-long gunbattle yesterday (Thursday)," he said.
Separately, police and soldiers killed two more Hizbul Mujahideen militants during a search operation in Reasi district in the Jammu region on Friday morning.
The group has suffered serious setbacks in the past few months with police arresting its chief spokesman and killing several top commanders.
An anti-Indian insurgency in the Himalayan state of Jammu and Kashmir since 1989 has left more than 43,000 people dead by official count.
The number of insurgency-related deaths has dropped sharply since India and Pakistan, which each hold part of the Kashmir region but both claim it in full, began a peace process in 2004. |
