| Army top brass meeting to discuss infiltration | | | New Delhi | Apr 25 With Jehadi groups in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir signalling plans to intensify their attacks on the Indian soil, the forthcoming Army Commanders conference here is to focus on measures to check any upsurge in terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. The four-day Combined Commanders conference, to be inaugurated by the Defence Minister A K Antony on April 28, would take stock of the militancy situation in the trouble-torn state, where official figures show a slight rise in attempts to cross the Line of Control. While, army sources said there were only 15 to 18 infiltration bids detected in the three winter months of January, February and March, there were about 14 such attempts in the current month only. The commanders focus on militancy comes in the backdrop of reports of a 742 km long anti-infiltration fence being submerged by snow at many places and some troop levels having been pulled out from the state. New measures to check militancy have also to be put in place in view of assembly elections in the state which are due later this year as the jehadi groups have declared their intentions to disrupt the poll process. The commanders' conference would be held under the chairmanship of the Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor and attended by General Officers Commanding in Chief of Western, Southern, Northern, Eastern, Central, South Western and Training Commands. Principal staff officers at the Army Headquarters including the Vice Chief, two Deputy Chiefs, Quarter Master General, Adjutant General, Master General of Ordinance would also be participating. Besides militancy, the main focus would be current modernization of the forces including special forces, artillery as well as armoured and infantry units. |
