People's hopes on PM's visit
4/25/2008 10:48:16 PM
On the occasion of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's visit to Jammu for two days, starting today, various sections of people have pinned high hoped of the visit paving way for solution of their problems and Prime Minister to announce some sops and measures to be undertaken to redress their grievances and meet their urgent demands. Since the visit of the Prime Minister this time is only few months before the next elections to the state assembly being held here, people are expecting some sops to be offered and announcement in this regard to be made. The unemployed youth in particular are pinning high hopes on the Prime Minister to announce some package of employment or some employment generating schemes to be initiated. The industrialists, who are feeling sore over the Central government having withdrawn some incentives like waiver of excise duty are expecting the Prime Minister to announce a revival of these concessions, besides announcing some fresh incentives, particularly in respect of regular supply and reduced rates of electric power to the industrial units. It is not only the section of traders in Jammu who have through media statements and conferences called for Prime Minister's intervention in announcing some relief and sops to provide fillip to the economy in the state, but Chamber of Commerce and Federation of Industry in Kashmir too have came out to demand, by holding a press conference, in Srinagar, for the Prime Minister to announce some economic package. Among the aggrieved section the refugees from Pakistan of 1947, who are denied right to permanent state resident certificate and as a result of it denial of government jobs and right to have immovable property in the state and even right to vote in the state assembly elections and refugees from PoK, migrants from militancy infested areas in Jammu region and even the border residents have been expecting some sops to be announced by the Prime Minister for them. A few lakh occupants of government lands, most of whom are lease holders for last 40 to 80 years have held demonstration to draw the attention of the Prime Minister towards alleged injustice being meted out to them by the state government in fixing high rates for granting of ownership rights to them on these lands. In the political sphere, various organizations have upped their ante to air their grievances by holding demonstrations, issuing press statements or addressing media conferences, to highlight their respective grouse. The ideas floated by the PDP leaders, which are alleged by the people of Jammu in particular and the nationalists all over the state in general to be anti national and pro secessionists are particularly the subject of debate and being highlighted by the opposition parties and groups in Jammu. Although Prime Minister's two days visit is confined to Jammu region alone, the separatists in Kashmir too are drawing his attention towards their grievance. The moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference has given call for a silent demonstration to draw the attention of the Prime Minister towards alleged continuous violence of human rights by the security forces in Kashmir. All this demonstrates people's faith in the democratic process and legitimate democratic means to give outlet to their grievances and seek their redressal.
