| ASER 2007 released at KU | | VC asks academicians to come forward with ‘alternative vision’ | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Apr 28 Academicians should come forward to give an alternative vision; let the secretaries and bureaucracy give their plans and let us blend the two for better results said Prof Riyaz Punjabi Vice chancellor University of Kashmir while releasing the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) for the state of Jammu and Kashmir (Rural) at Ghandi Bhawan University of Kashmir today. The Event was facilitated by PRATHAM. Padamsharee Prof Amitab Matoo Vice -Chancellor University of Jammu who could not attend the function, was represented by Prof Ashok Aima senior faculty of University of Jammu. Others present on the occasion were Dr Rukmani Banerji , representative PRATHAM , Prof Ashok Aima representing Jammu University, Registrar Kashmir University Prof Syed Fayaz Ahmad , Controller examinations Prof A M Shah , G J Nehvi secretary Indian Red cross Kashmir chapter, and ASER coordinator Dr Renu Nanda besides senior KU faculty heads and Deans of the departments , students and scholars . VC KU had a word of praise for press on the occasion whom he described as vibrant “ I always see press men here asking very relevant questions “ added VC and called for institutional arrangements for the talented youth especially in the country side so that they are able to give vent to their talent . It is the, knowledge based society today , the age of ideas not money and the reports like this one ASER 2007 can shape scheme of things for better in educational sector . Prof Riyaz Punjabi said that Pratham has launched an innovative programme in monitoring and assessing the status of education in J@K state . The assessment survey evaluation and research (ASER) reports in which simple and reliable scientific methods of sampling are used in assessing the status of education which are being brought out by Pratham are highly significant said VC . He further said that in this survey ordinary citizens are involved which enables them to develop a wide comprehension on the current situation in elementary education. This exercise said VC enables policy planners to introduce innovations and make the programmes of elementary education more effective. Prof Punjabi said that ASER reports are highly valuable in capacity building as well as dissemination and communication of information at the gross root level. VC added that the reports equally encourage the conduct of quality research in education and related fields. VC had a word of caution about opening new schools and collages without any proper infrastructure and teaching staff. Earlier Dr Rukmani Banerji , representative PRATHAM while making a power point presentation on the occasion about ASER , 2007 said that 63.9% children of 3-4 years age group have access to Anganwadi or other Pre-school which is lower than the National average. 29.7% children of 6-14 years are enrolled in Private school against the national average of 19.3% . She said that there are 3.6% children in 6-14 years age group who are out of school in the state against last year’s 4.7%. Jammu and Kashmir has followed the general trend around the country, of a drop in Out of School numbers in the state. Dr Rukmani Banerji added that 92% children in Std I & 2 can read letters or more in their own language. The report finds that 94% of children in Std 1-2 can recognize numbers from 1-9 and more while 67% children of Std 3-5 can do subtraction or more. Maths levels for both the groups are higher than National Figures. Giving details about the achievements of ASRO , J&K state co-coordinator and director Centre for the Study of Status of Elementary Education Jammu University Dr Renu Nanda claimed that ASER 2007 reached 567 of 584 rural districts of India covering 16,054 villages reaching 319,239 households and meeting 720,397 children of 3-16 years .
