Son of a reputed wrestler and himself a decorated cueist, Kuldeep Sharma (Choudhary) launched first of its kind in the state, the well equipped Choudhary Billiards and Snooker Academy in heart of the city, here today.
With the opening of an academy in Jammu, a long cherished dream of Kuldeep to have an exclusive playing facility for the young cueists has been fulfilled. “Since I have excelled in the game by taking away the senior state snooker championship twice and winning a record five-time the junior title, I wanted to expand the scope of the game by creating exclusive playing facilities out of MA Stadium,” Director of the Academy Kuldeep Sharma told Sports & Allied News.
To start with, the Academy has four international standard tables, including two pool (nine-ball) tables. “In the existing facility, we can train around 100 boys in day by dividing the trainees into different batches of 12-15 in a two-hour long class,” informed Kuldeep.
For exposure to the trainees, the Academy has plans to invite professional players of national repute for capsule courses. “You know after a particular stage, one hardly finds any scope to improve in the presence of same group of players, so to give exposure to our trainees, I have in mind to invite the players of national repute for short duration specialized training on a regular basis,” said Kuldeep.
Since the J&K Billiards and Snooker Association has a limited scope for activities, the Academy is looking forward to host at least one tournament quarterly to develop a sense of competition among its trainees.
When contacted Kuldeep’s father, Prem Choudhary said, “Sports is in our blood. I’m a qualified coach from National Institute of Sports (NIS) and my young son in an upcoming wrestler. It is my love for sports that I have invested in it by opening a health club and now a Billiards and Snooker Academy for youth of old city.”
Earlier, the Academy was inaugurated by a top cueist of the state, Kamal Rohmetra in a well attended function. Kamal has distinguished achievement in sports. Kamal has to his credit state snooker title for a record eight times and billiards title for nine times. Speaking to the young players, Kamal appreciated the efforts of Kuldeep in expanding the scope of the game by way of opening an exclusive academy in the city.
Prominent among others present were former state billiards and snooker champion, Sanjeev Gupta, Ajay Sharma, member State Sports Council, Sheetal Gandotra, secretary, J&K Billiards and Snooker Association, M M Singh and Dinesh Sawhney.
