| Govt yet to hear from states on Forest Act implementation | | | New Delhi | Apr 28 Five months after the forest rights act came into force, the government is yet to receive any information from the states regarding its implementation, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Monday. "The ministry has not received any information from the states so far regarding the vesting of forest rights and distribution of 'pattas' to the eligible forest dwelling scheduled tribes and other traditional forest dwellers," Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Rameshwar Oraon said in a written reply. He said the responsibility for implementing the scheduled tribes and other traditional forest dwellers (recognition of forest rights) act 2006 lies with the state and UT governments and "they are yet in the process of implementing the provisions of the act."
The minister said in order to ensure speedy implementation of the act, the ministry has conveyed the major actionable points along with timeliness to the state and UT governments for initiating follow-up action. He said that the act which extends to the whole of India except the state of Jammu and Kashmir has been challenged through petitions in the high courts of Andhra Pardesh, Chennai, Madurai and Bombay. |
