| “Mourning in silence” | | Arise, Awake from deep slumber not remain mute puppets | | JAMMU | AUGSUT 29 From the last 17 years, the terrorists and their mentors across the border are busy in perpetuating terrorism in the state of J&K which include killings of innocent people, raping of women folk, and launching false campaign against the security forces, which are fighting a proxy war and doing there service in maintaining the law & order in the state. This was disclosed by Col. D.K Badola GS (IW) 16 corps, while giving an exclusive interview to Early Times. Some of the excerpts of interview. He further said that terrorist groups have long used death as an instrument to derail efforts towards peace. The communal massacres predate the recent peace efforts to resolve the Jammu and Kashmir problem. In the initial phase of militancy, it was the state’s Pandit minority that became the target of terrorists. It did not stop at that, the arc of violence and atrocities on people soon extended to other minority communities and even engulfed Muslims of the state. He further said, in the year 1998, when terrorists realized that they were fighting a losing battle, they stepped up communal massacres taking it to unprecedented scale in 1998, 132 civilians died in six massacres across the state and after a short full in 1999 massacres regained momentum in 2000 he added. The current year 2006 has seen it’s fare share of killings and massacres when innocents were slaughtered at Kulhand, Laian Gilla in the month of May, killing of Nepalese labourers in Kulgam in the month of June, he added, this year has also seen a new trend whereby the terrorists are resorting to lobbying grenades on tourists who were visiting the valley and this happened after the Round Table Conference, which was held in Srinagar under unprecedent security cover. There have been successive grenade attacks in the valley causing immense causalities to guests of the state; such attacks not only affect the business and economy but also show the valley in a poor light to the common man and also the prospective tourists. Although all parties condemned the such attacks but these was hardly any protest over the issue. The new trend is that self-proclaimed advocates of freedom lovers have now started blaming security forces or counter terrorists groups. They are obviously least concerned about the problems of common man. He further maintained that, the terrorist organizations have always sought publicity in any form and it does not matter if it is negative. Their agenda is to be in news and make their presence felt. It is the opinion makers of the state who have to be awaken from their deep slumber and made to realize that the politics of silence will not work out. Terrorist organizations always are cruel and insensitive enough to play with the lives of common man in the street, he added. By hurting tourism and day-to-day life of common man in the valley, the terrorist organizations are traumatizing the local populace and are trying to shatter their life. It is time for us to look back upon all the atrocities that we have been witnessing silently. Just by mourning and softly condemning such attacks would not lead to the stopping of such deplorable acts. It is time that the intelligentia of the state rises form its deep slumber and not remain mute puppets in the hands of few who have been calling bandhs for every innocuous reason and leading the state and its culture to self destruction.
