| PDP to seek compensation for Indus treaty | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Apr 29 People's Democratic Party leader Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday said her party would "pursue the agenda" of seeking compensation for the state from the Centre for losses incurred due to the "discriminatory" Indus water treaty. "We face a recurring annual loss of around Rs 6000 crore because of the discriminatory Indus water treaty. We will take up this issue with the Centre", she said at a public meeting in Shopian in south Kashmir. "We also look forward to increasing the share in NHPC (National Hydro Power Corporation) up to 50 per cent which the previous regime had agreed on mere 12 per cent", Mufti said. She further said her party had dispelled the impression the state was wholly and solely looking to Delhi for finance and carved a niche by entering into agreement with Asian Development Bank which financed several projects in the state. Further praising her party, Mufti said PDP has restored the "lost credibility" of mainstream political parties in Jammu and Kashmir. "Besides landmark pro-people political and developmental initiatives pioneered by PDP, it has restored the lost credibility of mainstream political parties in the state by implementing its agenda in letter and spirit," she said. Taking on party's arch rival National Conference, Mufti said, "the recent contradictory statements dished out by NC leaders had exposed the inherent contradictions within the party." While on one hand, NC patron Farooq Abdullah blames PDP for having anti-national agenda for self-rule, duel currency, on the other hand he calls our agenda as Delhi made, what else can be called political bankruptcy, Mufti said. |
