| PPP may not stick to deadline for reinstating sacked judges | | | Islamabad | Apr 29 Hinting that his party might not stick to the April 30 deadline for reinstating dozens of judges sacked by President Pervez Musharraf, PPP chairman Asif Ali Zardari has said they would be restored through a constitutional package to be finalised within next two weeks. With just a day left for the deadline to expire, Zardari and Law Minister Farooq Naek are holding talks with a group of PML-N leaders headed by Shahbaz Sharif in Dubai to resolve the impasse. Talks between the two sides yesterday were inconclusive. The PML-N has been insisting that some 60 judges, who were deposed by Musharraf for not endorsing last year`s Emergency Rule, should be reinstated by April 30 in keeping with an agreement signed with the Pakistan People`s Party last month. While PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has hinted that the deadline could be extended by three to four days, he has made it clear that the restoration of the judges must not be linked to any constitutional package for judicial reforms. The influential lawyers` movement, which has been campaigning for the restoration of the judges, said it had not been taken into confidence by the ruling coalition. Former Supreme Court Bar Association president Munir A Malik said the lawyers were disappointed by Zardari`s comments and would consider their options after a meeting on May 2. In a programme aired by Geo News channel around midnight yesterday, Zardari said his agreement with Sharif on the restoration of the judges was "just a political statement" and it could be interpreted in different ways. |
