We have drifted away as doctors: Punjabi

“Today we need introspection and I strongly believe that doctors have to understand their role, recognize their social responsibility and come alive with that commitment and dedication which once used to be the hall mark of
this profession , said Prof Riyaz Punjabi Vice Chancellor Kashmir University while inaugurating the 13th Post Graduate Research Presentation Programme - (PGRP) 2008 at the Sheri Kashmir Institute of Medial sciences Srinagar (SKIMS) auditorium today forenoon .
Vice chancellor Prof Riyaz Punjabi was the chief guest at the inaugural function of the
prestigious two day PGRP 2008 where 60 post graduates from different fields of medicine are to present their thesis before experts . Prof Punjabi gave a detailed description of developments in the field of DNA studies and the latest researches being
conducted in protomics and said “ these developments open new vistas of research in medicine to which SKIMS should respond ”. Speaking on the social responsibility of doctors he said “I feel we have drifted away as doctors and nurses and something
somewhere has gone wrong “ and added that “ there is dire need to assert our position and accept community service and service to people as a challenge. “Your role is expanding and it is time to gear up to fulfill your social, spiritual and professional duty “said Prof Panjabi while addressing a galaxy of members from medical fraternity.
Referring to PGRP 2008 VC KU termed it as a big event and said that it shows that we have moved ahead. However, he felt the need to project the good work being done in such institutions outside as well. “I wonder the image people have about our
institutions outside “said VC and added that we got to do something about it “
Expressing satisfaction over the talent
possessed by Kashmiri Doctors VC said “There is something special about us and that is why we have been able to carve a niche for ourselves outside in many of the countries of the world as well. However Prof Punjabi showed concern over the decline in ranking of valleys premier medical college over the years by Medical Council Of India ( MCI). VC called for inter disciplinary research and greater connectivity between institutions while treading the path of academic excellence. “Let us get together and do something to raise our educational standards” said VC while appealing young medicos to strive for
excellence in medical education
VC was highly appreciative of the event and said that Post graduate students will find research presentation programs as an appropriate forum for learning where they can present research. work share their experience and interact with other researchers and resource persons. Dr. Abdul Hamid Zargar Director SKIMS and patron PGRP said that it is with this objective that the students will interact with other researchers and resource persons that the SKIMS has been annually conducting Postgraduate Research
