| Ex-PDP leader joins National Conference | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | May 2 The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday received a further set-back when its former general secretary Sonaullah Dar, who had quit from the party recently, joined the Opposition National Conference (NC). Dar, who had quit the PDP on April 13 following strained relations with senior leaders, was formally inducted into NC by party Chief Omar Abdullah and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah at party headquarters in Srinagar. Welcoming Dar into the party, Omar said the party's base in Anantnag and Pulwama districts would be now strengthened as Dar is an influential leader of the area. NC had managed to win only two assembly seats in 2002 elections from the south Kashmir districts. Dar, a former NC leader, had switched his loyalty to Awami National Conference in 1984 before joining PDP in 2002. When asked about his earlier statement that the doors of his party had been closed for deserters, Omar said "we have not pressured Dar to join the party. He has joined on his own to strengthen the National Conference. "We could not offer a ministerial birth or money to Dar to join us because we are still in Opposition and there was no guarantee that NC will come to power in upcoming elections," Omar said adding there are no permanent friends or foes in politics. |
