Jammu | May 2
The winter capital city of Jammu and most of its adjoining areas in the region today observed a near total shut down in protest against the rising prices of essential commodities.
Shops and most of business establishments were voluntarily closed down for more than half of the day but there was no effect on transport and other essential services. There were also no reports of any forces closure of establishments.
The shutdown was a part of nationwide protest against inflation launched on the call of BJP. In Jammu region too it was on the appeal issued by the BJP and supported by many other political and social groups.
The near total shutdown any usual pressure or force reflected a general public outcry against the rising prices of essential commodities, particularly the eatables, which it hitting everybody hard.
A large number of BJP workers and supporters came on to the streets and raised anti government slogans holding them responsible for not controlling prices of essential commodities.
.The BJP activists also burnt down effigy of Congress led UPA government near Kachi Chhawni to register their protest. Large number of schools had announced holiday in advance while few others conducted their classes in normal fashion. Offices too functioned normally though attendance was thin in some places. Bahu Plaza, shopping malls, and various other city markets downed their shutters. At several places BJP workers were seen moving in the city in open jeeps urging people to support the party and expose anti poor programmers and policies of the congress party.
Reports reaching here from Kathua, Samba, RS Pura, Rajouri and Poonch said that near normal bandh was observed at all the places by BJP workers. In Jammu several city markets remained closed but in t he afternoon shops opened their shutters in the last afternoon at certain places.
After burning the effigy of the Congress-led UPA govt the party activists were seen moving across the city carrying party flags and raising slogans. The BJP workers were blaming the Congress for steep rise in the prices of essential commodities.
BJP State Gen. Secretary Shamsher Singh Manhas, in his address, held the Congress-led UPA responsible for the price rise. He said whenever Congress has come to power, the nation has witnessed rise in the prices of food items. The Congress has always misled the common masses by the slogan of “Congress ka haath, gareeb ke saath” but in reality “Congress ka haath has turned out to be gareeb ke khilaaf”. This is so because the Congress, when comes to power, adopts such policies which take care of the interests of a handful of big business houses, black marketers and hoarders and have no concern for the welfare and survival of a common citizen.
Rajesh Gupta, on this occasion, said that during the BJP government at the Centre. There was no price rise. No one dared to indulge in hoarding or black marketing because the BJP-led NDA was more concerned for the common Indian. We faced sanctions after Pokhran, country witnessed Kargil and many parts of India were hit by earthquakes, droughts and floods but still there was no price rise. He urged the people to not trust Congress any more as it has turned out to be anti-poor and expressed confidence that the BJP will form governments at the centre and in the state and work for mitigation of the sufferings of the masses.
