| VC asks researchers to find solutions to modern health challenges | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | May 3 Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Pranabaka Lakshmi today inaugurated a one day regional seminar on “Patent and IPR issues in Unani Medicine” at Ghani Bhawan University of Kashmir. Vice Chancellor Kashmir University Prof Riyaz Punjabi presided over the inaugural function. The seminar was organized by Council for Scientific and Research in Unani Medicine Union Ministry for Health and Family Welfare in collaboration with Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine of Kashmir University. In his presidential address, VC said that the seminar is of immense significance as ours is a region which has been the home to various traditional systems of medicine and there is lot of traditional knowledge associated to it as well. He said that we have to play a significant role in the protection of such knowledge so that we can build our health care system keeping in view the modern day needs. He urged the researchers of the Unani medicine to focus on finding out dependable solutions through Unani medicine to modern health challenges. Prof Punjabi refereed to the ever growing health care, educational and research institutions of Unani medicine in the world and said he will personally monitor the progress and growth of Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine at Kashmir University and re-activate it further. VC while asking the Union Minister for restoration of scholarships to KU faculty and scholars further made a request for giving short term fellowships to KU faculty. Regarding the issue of Intellectual Property Rghts (IPR) VC said that there is the dire need to make scientists and scholars aware about such issues. Earlier, the Union Minister Pranabaka Lakshmi in her inaugural speech suggested that University of Kashmir may send schemes under Extra Mural Research programme for assistance by Government of India adding that her ministry would be more than happy to consider them. She also, on the request of VC KU, announced free medical treatment RRIUM KU for the employees and students of Kashmir University.
