Newly appointed PCC President and Union Water Resources Minister, Prof. Saif-ud-Din Soz, is slowly but surely coming out of the shadow to register his presence and win hearts and minds of the party cadre.
Judging his performance as state PCC chief it becomes implicitly clear that Soz is rising in stature at the cost of declining graph of State Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.
Inside reports suggest that when Prof. Soz was appointed PCC President, over three months ago, senior party leaders had not expected him to make an impact but several legislators and a couple of Congress MPs have become his staunch supporters.
Senior Congress leaders, including Madan Lal Sharma, MP and Mulla Ram, Minister for Rural Development, are in the forefront of those who support Prof. Soz. The reason is that Prof. Soz has sanctioned several crores of rupees for resolving water problems in their constituencies out of funds from the water resources ministry.
Another senior congress leader said that Prof. Soz has been liberal in providing financial aid to the needy. He said that those Congress leaders, including legislators, who were not in the good books of Chief Minister, have started securing their political career by supporting Prof. Soz. Though Prof. Soz and Azad no longer have strained relations the anti-Azad lobby is trying hard to draw comfort by trying to be in Soz’s camp. They believe that when the Congress party starts the exercise of short listing the party candidates for the ensuing Assembly election Prof. Soz, as PCC President, could have an upper hand in the selection process. Hence they prefer proximity with the union minister to the Chief Minister without knowing that Azad continues to be a trusted man of the Prime Minister and AICC President Sonia Gandhi.
When Prof. Soz was appointed as PCC President Congress leaders and legislators belonging to the Jammu region were not initially happy with the decision only because Prof. Soz hailed from the Kashmir valley. Within three months, senior Congressmen have been impressed by the down to earth attitude of Prof. Soz and they feel that he alone could infuse vigour in the PCC. Now all eyes are on Soz as state congressmen are awaiting reconstitution of the PCC by Prof. Soz. |
