| Depots run dry as rising prices open market for CAPD food grains | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 3 While the rising prices of rice and flour has upset the common man's budget off late, the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Officials and depot owners have their business flourishing these days with players in open market offering attractive rates for the food grains meant for public distribution. As the pilferage of CAPD food grains since the unprecedented hike in prices of Rice and flour have broken all previous records, the Depot owners across Jammu have since long downed their shatters putting up no stock placards outside their stores to the agony of rationees. For now, it is since last two months that the ration cardholders of Jammu region are being denied food grains and forced to purchase the same from open market on highly exorbitant rates. Sources said besides the routine misappropriations done by adulteration and pilferage of the original freights received from FCI at CAPD stores, the officials and depot owners are also now making huge bucks by directly black marketing ninety percent of food grains. Sources said, each hundred Kg gunny bag packing of rice gets Rs one thousand in the open market, which is being equally shared by the involved parties. This newfound method excludes the routine money made by the officials by adulteration and pilferage of the original packing by adding ten-kilogram mixture of rotten rice and sand. Since the rates of rice in the open market has witnessed over sixty percent increase, private businessmen gladly purchase the CAPD rice and earn about equal amount of one thousand on one quintal even after extracting the adulterated material, sources added. |
