Promotion of Anganwari workers on cards: Vakil

Minister for Social Welfare Mr. Abdul Gani Vakil and along with Minister of State for R&B Ch. Gharu Ram today visited Naibasti Gulabgarh in Suchetgarh to distribute 535 old age, widow and handicapped pension cheques and 18 National Family Benefit Scheme cheques amounting to Rs.9,16,100 among the beneficiaries of Suchetgarh here this afternoon.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Vaik said that coalition government is keen for welfare of Anganwari workers and steps were afoot to help raise their honorarium by pursuing the issue at central level. He said top priority was being given on speedy disposal of promotion files of all employees at all levels to infuse energy in administrative machinery for speedy progress and development of the state. He dwelt in detail on the reformative measures initiated in social welfare department. He said widows, old age and destitute now only need production of BPL card for obtaining security pension. The poor people not possessing BPL cards would be eligible for pension on the recommendation of Numberdar and Chowkidars of their respective villages, he added.
The Minister said that Block Medical Officer has been made final authority for certifying handicapped for securing pension, Mr. Vakil said and adding the steps have been taken to simplify heavy procedures for extending help to the distressed speedily. He said the honorarium of Anganwari workers would be disbursed to them on monthly basis from May onwards. The impediment hampering timely disbursement of honorarium has been removed, he added. He said promotion of nearly 250 Anganwari workers as Supervisors was in final stage and would be effected shortly. He referred to increase of Rs. 500 in their monthly honorarium, saying the order would take effect retrospectively very soon. He said that about 13050 new Anganwari workers would be recruited across the state by the end of this month.
Speaking on the occasion, Ch. Gharu Ram said that Azad-led government was taking keen interest to uplift the socio-economic condition of the weaker sections of the society across the state. For this purpose, the government has launched number of welfare schemes included Pre-Matric Scholarship, Re-imbursement of Exam fee, Stipend to trainees of ITI, Tool & Kits, Scholarship to sweeper children, book bank scheme, homes for destitute and orphans, Integrated Social Security Scheme, National Social Assistance Programme, Integrated Child Development Scheme, Financial Assistance to Voluntary Organisations and Social Security Scheme for Marginal Workers etc.
Highlighting the achievements of Azad-led government, Ch. Gharu Ram said that scores of villages of Suchetgarh constituency were connected with nearest headquarter R. S. Pura by providing road connectivity. To improve power scenario in the area, he said that five receiving stations were commissioned and hundreds of transformers were installed and upgraded. To ease rush of admissions of higher classes in Jammu city, the government has also opened a Degree college at R. S. Pura. He stressed the officers to complete the ongoing development works in the area before rainy season for the benefit of people.
Later, the Minister for Social Welfare Mr. Abdul Gani Vail convened a high level meeting of Social Welfare Department officers to review the progress registered during 2007-08.
Principal Secretary to Government Social Welfare Department Mr. R. K. Jerath, Director Social Welfare Mr. Laj Ram and other senior officers of SWD were present in the meeting.
