| Lecture series on information technology concludes at MIET | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 5 A month-long lecture series today concluded at MIET. During this time 3 lectures were organized on advances in the Information Technology domain by the departments of Computer Science and Engineering, Information technology and MCA. Over 200 students of MIET from these departments attended the lectures and gained valuable knowledge during the process. The Invited lecture series is one of the initiatives at MIET, which aims to supplement the regular teaching-learning process and expose the students to emerging areas and advances in existing areas in their discipline. The invited lecture series was kick-started with a Seminar on “Digital Image Processing” by Prof. K.V Arya, Professor and Head, Department of Computer Science and IT at the MJP Rohailkhand University in Uttar Pradesh. Prof. Arya, who has a PhD in Computer Science from the prestigious IIT Kanpur, is one of the leading authorities in the field. In his lecture Prof. Arya touched upon the diverse applications of Image Processing Software including face recognition, retrieval of specific information from images, pattern matching, restoration of damaged manuscripts and the like. A separate session for the faculty with focus on research in Image Processing was also held. The second lecture was delivered by Prof. Simmi Dutta, Head, Computer Science department at Govt. College of Engineering and Technology, Jammu. She delivered a thought-provoking seminar on “Advances in Software Engineering” and covered emerging concepts like agile software development, extreme programming, component-based software engineering and advances in software life-cycle management. The seminar was very well-received by the students and the faculty. Prof. Lalit Sen from the Dept. of Computer Applications, Jammu University delivered the concluding invited lecture on “Web Applications”, which is an in-demand skill in the IT Industry. Aspects such as programming techniques for developing web-applications using JAVA or .NET were discussed during the seminar. Speaking on the occasion of the concluding lecture, Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Prof. S.K Sharma, Principal, MIET congratulated the HoDs of the respective departments on organizing a series of lectures on Information Technology, which he felt would go a long way in providing the students additional inputs beyond their curriculum. He expressed gratitude to the learned speakers for delivering high-quality lectures for the benefit of the student community. Prof. Ankur Gupta, Joint Director, MIET apprised the audience on the initiatives taken by the institute in the domain of Computer Science and IT for instance setting up of the advanced software engineering laboratory and the upcoming Second National Conference on Next-Generation Computing and Information Systems at MIET in Oct’08. |
