| Day one witness protest, gheroe by employees | | 'Darbar' resumes at Srinagar | | Early Times Reporte Srinagar | May 5 The annual Darbar that opened today here at summer capital was greeted by strong protests by government employees who also made an abortive attempt to gheroe the civil Secretariat. The police resort to mild cane charge to restrict the protesting employees to enter the heavily guarded secretariat premises and arrested some of their leaders. The protest was the part of valley wide strike call given by Employees Joint Action Committee on the opening of the Secretariat here to press its demand. However, the Secretariat employees kept themselves aloof from the strike. Thousands of government employees gathered at historical Lal Chowk early this morning and later marched towards civil secretariat shouting slogans in support of their demands including early implementation of sixth pay commission. The other major demands being highlighted by the protesting employees included enhancement of rtirement age from present fifty-eight years to sixty years and reducing the service limit for qualifying for pension benefits to 21 years. As the protesting employees moved towards the secretariat they were restricted by the contingents of police at Jhangir Chowk. Police also resorted to cane charge to disperse the employees and arrested their leaders. Meanwhile, sources said that the Secretariat employees union had decided not to support their counter parts serving outside. They said that the representatives of secretariat union even met Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and assured him that it would not allow any one to affect the working of the state's premier public office.
