Jammu | May 5
Aaya Ram, Gaya Ram is the basic course of politics in an election year. But in Jammu and Kashmir, no other party would have suffered with the pilferage of its ranks as much as the Peoples Democratic Party is facing.
A party out of PDP is just in making. Ghulam Hassan Mir, former Minister and one of pillars of the PDP has announced his outfit named as Democratic Party. It is literally Peoples minus the Democratic Party. The formal launch has been fixed for Wednesday.
Mir has dished out invitations for the launch and a place for headquarter has been rented in Kursu, Rajbagh area of Srinagar. When asked what was the need of launching a new party, Mir said, “it is all about giving the people of Kashmir a democratic space”. He pointed out that PDP was launched as an alternative of the National Conference but it has ended up as yet another National Conference.
It is learnt that Mir has the backing of MLA from Beerwah Sarfaraz Khan, MLC Bilal Lodhi and prominent leader G M Bawan Mohammad Shoaib Lone, who won the Sangrama assembly seat in 2006 by-elections and was supported by Mir, is also expected to join the new outfit at a later date, the sources said.
Mir alleged that the PDP has turned into a fiefdom of former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and his daughter Mehbooba Mufti and there was no democracy in the party. "In 1998, people of Kashmir had no option but National Conference and so PDP emerged... Today, PDP has become what National Conference has been all along," he claimed.
Mir who had met Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, in Delhi on May 3 has totally dissociated with the PDP demand for introducing dual currency in Jammu and Kashmir. In reply to a question Mir said “I did not discuss dual currency with the Prime Minister because I have nothing to do with the issue.”He explained that the dual currency did not form part of the self-rule for which a document has been prepared. He said that being a member of the committee constituted by the PDP for drafting the self-rule document I did not find anything like dual currency in the document.
Meanwhile, following the queue of Ghulam Qadir Wani who left the PDP to join BJP, the PDP’s district Baramulla president Javed Dar too has quit the party. Close to heels of his decision of deserting the party, the government has removed his from the chairmanship of Baramulla Cooperative Bank and slapped against him charges of fraud and misuse of official authority.
