| Come, test performance, Azad asks parties | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 5 Promising neat and clean elections, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today said that those airing apprehensions about rigging were living under the shadow of their own malpractices of past. He invited the political parties to join poll battle on performance and credibility as he assured that elections would be most free and fair. Azad also counseled the parties to refrain from making personal attacks to score points over the others. In an informal conversation with the media persons on eve of reopening of civil secretariat in Srinagar, the Chief Minister said that those who talked about possible rigging in the elections were actually taking cover of the allegation for their imminent bad performance at the hustings. He said there was no question of rigging in the elections and he was committed to free and fair polls in the State. He said elections would be the fairest and freest of all, not only throughout the country but the whole world. The Chief Minister recalled the bye elections held for the state assembly during his chief ministership and said that he had warned government officials with dismissal from service if found involved in any electoral malpractice. He said he was still firm on this warning and assured all political parties that elections would be held in the most democratic manner. Azad asked political parties to fight elections on the strength of their policies and performance and expressed himself against using any force or indulging in personal attacks of the opponents by political leaders to score a point. He said they should leave to the electorate the choice for electing candidates and the parties in the fray. The Chief Minister said that during the past five and a half years, the coalition government in J&K had created an atmosphere of peace and progress and hoped that it would be further strengthened during the next six months before the elections were held. He said the situation born of the last 20 years had vastly improved and specifically referred improvement on the human rights front. He said the custodial deaths had reduced to near zero level while there was no case of custodial disappearance for the past about two years. He said men and women were now freely moving around and carrying on their normal activities. On the development front, the Chief Minister said that J&K was marching ahead with other states of the union. He said the work culture introduced by him had yielded positive results. He complimented people and the government officials for their support to his efforts for changing the development scenario for the better. He said officials from the lowest to the highest level had contributed towards this end. He said despite difficulties, infrastructure development in education, health, power, water supply and roads sectors across the State was commendable. Earlier, on his arrival at the civil secretariat, the Chief Minister was accorded a warm reception. He was received by ministers, senior officers and office bearers of the J&K Civil Secretariat Non-Gazetted Employees Union. The President, CSNGEU, Nazir Ahmad Mir also told him about some demands of the employees. |
