| New Tribal Bill to be tabled during winter session | | |
New Delhi, Aug 30 Aiming at improving the socio- economic conditions of the tribals, the Government is all set to bring a Tribal Bill in the winter session of Parliament.
"The Tribal Bill is almost ready. We will table the Bill in the next session of Parliament," Union Tribal Affairs Minister P R Kyndiah told PTI on the sidelines of a function here.
The Joint Parliament Committee, which had examined the bill that will also grant land rights to forest-dwelling tribals, has already submitted its recommendations which are now being considered by a Group of Ministers headed by Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee.
The GoM has already held a meeting to consider the JPC recommendations and would soon finalise the changes in the legislation.
"We are trying to make it as comprehensive as possible," Kyndiah said.
Once finalised, the Bill would be sent to the Union Cabinet for approval and then tabled in Parliament.
The objective of the Bill was to bring tribals at par with the rest of the population in terms of their Human Development Index, socio-economic conditions and basic infrastructure facilities in tribal areas.
The Bill, when it becomes law, will facilitate regulatory protection, socio-economic and political empowerment, development of infrastructure for tribals among others.
Other provisions will provide for increased livelihood opportunities, participation in governance, preservation of cultural, traditional rights and traditional knowledge, protection of traditional knowledge in the intellectual property rights regime and access to privileges. |
