| Tri-services command in South likely | | | Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 30 Setting up of a tri- services command based in Thiruvananthapuram is under consideration, according to Air Marshal S Y Savur, Commanding- in-Chief of the Southern Air Command (SAC).
The proposal was under the consideration of the Committee of Three Services Chiefs, Savur, who is retiring from service tomorrow, told a press meet here today.
There was earlier a proposal to make SAC as an aero-space command. Now, there was a slight change in the scheme as the service chiefs were considering setting up a tri-service command here, he said.
"It all depends on what decision the Committee takes. If it materialises, this would be third tri-services command after Delhi and the Andamans." Considering the strategic imporance of the area, the SAC would be expanding in the coming days. As part of this, Air Force stations in Tanjavur and Sulur near Coimbatore would be strengthened to base bigger aircraft.
Savur, who took over as SAC chief in October 2004, was commissioned into the Flying (Pilot) branch of IAF in 1966.
An alumnus of National Defence College, he has commanded three stations of the IAF and served in various posts at the Air Headquarters and in Eastern Air Command.
He was awarded Param Vishist Seva Medal in January for distringuished service.
