| Two SPOs `tortured' in police custody; people stage protest | | | Early Times Reporter Mendhar | May 5 Large number of people held protest demonstration in Mendhar area of Poonch district against the alleged torture of two detenues, said to be Special Police Officers (SPOs), at Gorsi police station. The people were protesting against what they called 'Gunda Gardi in Khaki Wardi'. They alleged that two SPOs arrested by the police were subjected to third degree torture by the cops in custody in Ari village. It was reliably learnt that on April 27 one Chanchal Devi lodged a written complaint with the police against Master Azizdin alleging she was being harassed by him during night hours. Police instead of calling Master to the police station gave thrashing to the complainant woman who felt unconscious. "She was mercilessly beaten by the SI Qamer Din at the police station", a close relative of the woman said. On knowing, the husband and brother of the Chanchal Devi, who were said to be SPOs went to police station and caught hold of the SHO and torn his clothes. The duo was over powered by the police personnel on duty and put behind bars. Both the SPO's Vikram Sharma and Ram Paul, when today brought to the court, when they were noticed to be limping. "People noticed that the two SPOs have been given severe bashing by the police in custody", a local resident said adding people of the area gathered near the court complex here and shouted anti police slogans demanding suspension of the SHO incharge Qamer Din. Informed sources told that soon after the two SPO's were brought to the court today the people throng the complex and demand suspension of the Incharge SHO Gursai Police Station. The protesters from all the communities while observing the torture on the bodies of the SPO's continues their protest till they were pacified by the Sub Divisional Magistrate who assured action against SHO if found guilty. Meanwhile, both the parties have lodged counter complaints. While the wife of SPO's Ram Paul lodged a FIR under section 452,147,148,336,323 and 506. The primary complainant Master had also lodged a complaint against the woman under sections 447,427,147,506,336 and 323. |
