| Soldiers of Kashmir valour among 65 get Presidential awards | | | New Delhi | May 7 Four army men, including Major K Prabhakar Vinay, who laid down his life after killing two terrorists in the Kashmir valley are among 65 armed forces personnel decorated by President Pratibha Devisingh Patil at a military investiture at the Rashtrapati Bhawan today. The late Major Prabhakar Vinay and three others -- Major Shtrujeet Kotwal of the Jat regiment, Capt Pankaj Kumar of the Gorkha rifles and Sepoy Suresh were awarded Kirti Chakras, the nation's second highest peacetime gallantry award in the military roll of honours. Major Kotwal pursued an escaped dreaded terrorist and raided their hide out in the deep jungle in Badgam district, killing two terrorists. Sepoy Suresh who died while engaging heavily armed group of terrorists near the Line of Control in Kupwara district was also awarded Kirti Chakra posthumously for killing two terrorists single handedly. The military roll of honours included 13 Param Vishist Seva Medals, 27 AVSMs and 29 Shauraya Chakras for exceptional bravery in the face of the enemy. Chief of Integrated Defence Staff Lt General Hardev Singh Lidder, Dy Chief of Army staff Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah, the elder brother of cine star Nassiruddin Shah, Lt General Kuldip Singh Jamwal and Air Marshal Pradeep Vasant Naik were among those decorated with PVSM. The recipients of the Ati Vishist Seva Medal include Srinagar based 15 Corps commander, Lt General Mukesh Sabharwal, Military Secretary to the President, Lt Gen Vinod Chopra and Vice-Admiral Krishan Raina, Chief of Logistics at the Naval headquarters here. Both Sabharwal and Chopra are receiving the award for the second time. Two other vice Admirals Shekhar Sinha and Surgeon Admiral V K Saxena were also decorated with the AVSM. Twenty-one Army and Air Force personnel were decorated with Shaurya Chakras including six posthumously. |
