| Favouritism in hills: Thy name is SMVDU | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 7 Away from the hustle bustle of capitals and aloof from media gaze, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, instead become true pride of Jammu, is emerging as a hub of nepotism and favouritism. When Sri Mata Vaishno Devi University came up, it sparked a ray of hope for the people of Jammu region. Unfortunately, over the years the University has become an institution in isolation, where neither merit is cared nor the aspirations of people of Jammu. The University authorities were successful in having the Prime Minister of India as Chief Guest on its first convocation. It may not be out of place to mention here that ahead of Prime Minister’s visit, the Vice Chancellor claimed that the SMVDU is emerging as an institution of global repute. However, this statement does not go well with the people working with the University who are witness to merits being thrown to winds day in and day out. The discriminatory functioning of some heads and higher ups has marred the career of the aspiring candidates as preference is being given to the blue eyed boys in appointments and promotions, the sources said. In one such incident, one Sanjeev Nagpal and his wife were appointed as Junior Assistants in the University. While the allegations of overlooking merits are yet to be clarified by the authorities that the couple has got promotion to next higher grade within a span of a month and half. Whole dolling out favours in the Nagpal couple, the University authorities bypassed merit and seniority of at least four other officials who had joined the campus on same position much ahead of Nagpal couple. Similarly, Vivek Verma and Trupti Saitu were appointed as Office Secretaries few months back. Even before completion of their one year in service, they next higher promotion as Assistant Registrars. Undue favours, however, do not end here. The Vice Chancellor had granted one advance increment to the duo at the cost of other employees, causing heart burning to them. When contacted in this connection, the Vice Chancellor of the University said that he is giving preference to hard work and intelligence. However, when spoken to, a cross section of SMVD University employees said that there are many who are far more intelligent and hardworking than those who have got the undue favours. |
