| Samba border violation need not alarm us | | | | Even though the ceasefire and secession of hostilities between India and Pakistan that came into being in 2003, witnessed a major violation on the international border in Samba sector of Jammu on Thursday May 8, the statement by the Pak Defense Minister Chaudhary Ahmed Mukhtar that Pakistan does not want another war with India over Kashmir should be reassuring against any mischievous adventure by that country. The unfortunate breach of ceasefire, with Pak rangers resorting to heavy firing, which obviously was aimed at providing cover to the infiltrators trying to enter our side of the international border, in order to indulge into acts of sabotage and subversion, is highly unfortunate development, even if the same was foiled by the BSF on our side. In the past the Pakistani troops would invariably resort to heavy firing on the BSF deployed along the LoC or the international border, with a view to provide cover to the infiltration taking place from across the border or LoC. But that would be a routine affair and the same had the backing of the ruling dispensation in Pakistan, who openly supported and abated the militants operating against India, having their launching pads in PoK and Pakistan. This would invariably lead to heavy exchange of fire from both sides, leading to dislocation of a large number of people living along the international border and LoC. But after the ceasefire agreement entered into by the two countries, the heavy firing from across that took place on Thursday was a major violation of the ceasefire agreement. Yet giving some margin and being charitable to Pakistan, it can be presumed that the event might have been the outcome of over zealousness on the part of the Pakistani rangers posted on that side of the border and that the same is not a part of any major game plan of Pakistan to indulge into fresh hostilities against India. Despite the fact that there are authentic reports and reliable evidence about which the National Security Advisor M K Narayanan as well as the army generals have repeatedly stated that the terrorist training camps are still intact in Pakistan and the secret agency of that country ISI has still links with the terrorists in that country operating against India, the new ruling establishment has repeatedly stressed that it has nothing on its sleeves to embark upon any misadventure against India and that they are all out for fostering friendship with India and improving trade ties and international trade, which is to the mutual interest of both the countries. While remaining vigilant and leaving nothing at chance, we can rely on the commitments of Pakistani leaders and give them space and time to have full control of situation in their country, to contain and check the mischievous elements, either in their army, ISI or some religious fundamentalists, who continue to be entertaining ill will towards our country. Such skirmishes as took place on the Samba border should in no way bring bitterness in our mutual relations, although India should lodge a strong but guarded protest with Pakistan and on our own part we remain fully alert and vigilant to foil any mischievous design by the enemy. Nevertheless it should not create any panic or alarm. |
