| J&K to have campus of Tribal University | | One region to get CU, other IIM | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 11 In an act of perfect regional balance, the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has ensured that both Jammu and Kashmir regions get one prestigious institute each –Central University (CU) and Indian Institute of Management (IIM)–which have already been announced by the central government. However, this has to be seen as which region gets campus of the upcoming National Tribal University. In Chief Minister’s meeting with Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh it has been decided that Jammu and Kashmir will get a campus of the upcoming National Tribal University and work on the already proposed Indian Institute of Management and the Central University will commence soon. An official spokesman said that the two prestigious institutions would be set up one each in Kashmir and Jammu provinces. It may be mentioned here that as a part of central government’s populist budget bonanza, the Jammu and Kashmir state is set to get the coveted Indian Institute of Management, and a Central University. These institutions of higher learning will be covered in the eleventh five year plan. Following proposal made in the Union Budget by Finance Minister P Chidambram, the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has approved setting up of six Indian Institutes of Management including one in Jammu and Kashmir. However, the state had later also staked claim for a Central University –new or accord of status to an existing one which too has been granted to Jammu and Kashmir. In this connection, the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad also had a meeting with the Prime Minister and the Human Resource Development Minister. Also proposed in the Union Budget, the central government has announced locations for 16 new Central Universities in which Jammu and Kashmir also figures. As regards 14 Central Universities aiming at world class standards, it has been considered necessary that these are located in or near selected large cities which would automatically have the kind of connectivity and infrastructure which such universities would need. Jammu and Kashmir is not one of them. The IIMs are the most prestigious management institutions in the country under the department of Human Resource Development with a status of Deemed University. The entrance tests for the management programs of the IIMs are considered as one of toughest in the world. The Union Budget had proposed creation of four new IITs and six new IIMs. Though Jammu and Kashmir could not get an IIT, but the government has cleared an IIM. The state government has been asked to identify land for the campus. Not it has to be seen whether the proposed IIM is set up in Jammu or it goes to the Kashmir Valley. While the new IITs would be located in Orissa, Madhya Pradesh (Indore), Gujarat and Punjab, the IIMs would come up in Tamil Nadu, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh (Raipur), Uttarakhand and Haryana. These new institutions would be part of the eight IITs and seven IIMs proposed to be set up during the 11th Five Year Plan. Government has already announced establishment of four IITs in Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar and Himachal Pradesh and one IIM at Shillong. |
