Early Times Report

Budgam, May 18: As sexual abuse among children is growing at an alarming rate in state, the NSS Wing of Islamia College of Science & Technology Srinagar in collaboration with Khyber Public School Chadoora held a one day workshop on child abuse at Chadoora in central Kashmir's Budgam district on Saturday.
"The purpose of organizing this workshop was to empower children with knowledge which can save them from various kinds of abuse that includes sexual abuse as well. Society needs to be proactive on this issue as maintaining silence may lead to serious consequences" said Prof Rehana Bhat who heads NSS unit of Islamia College of Science & Technology Srinagar
While interacting with children in the age group of 4 to 12 years Prof Rehana gave a detailed presentation on body safety and body boundaries. Speaking on the occasion she said that 95% of child sexual abuse can be prevented through proper knowledge and awareness among children between the age group of 4 to 12 years. Prof Irfana Shafi presented a vote of thanks. She thanked Shahnawaz Sultan Chairperson, Khyber Public School, his staff and NSS volunteers for taking a lead in organizing this kind of workshop in a rural area of Budgam district . NSS unit of Islamia College is planning to hold more such workshops in Srinagar and other districts of Kashmir valley. "I fail to comprehend how people continue to remain silent when it comes to sexual abuse of children. Everyone knows about it but people still prefer to remain in a deep state of denial, unless the brutal rapes of little children surface and make headlines.
