| BJP seeks security of scribes | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 12 A day after a photojournalist was killed during an encounter between militants and the security forces in Samba sector of Jammu and Kashmir, the BJP on Monday sought a mechanism for social and economic security of media persons operating in the trouble-torn state. Condoling the demise of senior photo journalist Ashok Sodhi and others during the encounter, BJP state unit president Ashok Khajuria said "there should be consensus among the parties of all shades to devise a mechanism by raising a corpus fund to help the media fraternity in the state." The mechanism should guarantee social and economic security to media persons. Favouring a legislation to provide pension to journalists on the pattern of ex-legislators, the BJP leader said this could guarantee economic security for the families of journalists who die in harness. "Our party has decided to make a humble contribution of Rs 25,000 to the family of Sodhi of 'Daily Excelsior'. The party high command will also announce some relief," he said. Alleging that the Centre and Congress-led coalition in the state are militant-friendly, he said both the dispensations were responsible for the killings of thousands of civilians and security personnel in the state. "The ongoing orgy of death and destruction in the state is the immediate fallout of the weakened policies of Congress which revoked anti-terror laws, including POTA," the BJP leader said. |
