| Role of media pivotal in present context: Baig | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | May 12 Highlighting the role of media in modern day society, the Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Muzaffar Hussain Baig said “for being fourth estate of a democratic set up, media has a very important role in social, economical and political transformation”. The Deputy Chief Minister was addressing a gathering of journalists and intellectuals at an inauguration function of local electronic channel at Baramulla today. Referring to the freedom of speech, the Deputy Chief Minister said that the media men should fearlessly report different events and happenings without succumbing to any pressure which may otherwise hamper the actual reporting, however he added the facts should be truly reflected after ascertaining the veracity. Imploring the media to be objective while covering an event, Mr. Baig said that media acts as a mirror of a society therefore any distorted version of a story or an event can have serious repercussion which may even flare any communal passions/hatred. “It also acts as a watch dog, which provides an active feedback to the political elite about various issues and schemes and provides an effective medium for introspection”, he maintained. Mr. Baig also asked the press not to restrict to local issues only but also give regular coverage to various international events. “In the present context any event happening anywhere in the world can also have affects locally whether it is political, social or environmental”, he added. Asking for a participatory role of people in giving feed back to press, Mr. Baig said that people should also come forward with an active feedback regarding various issues which they face during their everyday life. The Deputy Chief Minister also inspected Government Girls Higher Secondary School Baramulla and issued on spot instructions for renovation of the school campus. He also sanctioned an amount of Rs. 1 lakh for furniture, 30 computers for the students, water filtration set up and a botanical garden. The Deputy Chief Minister also inaugurated the operation theatre of the district hospital Baramulla which will be having the facilities of conducting operations relating to ophthalmology, gynecology and orthopedics. He also went round the wards of the hospital, which have been provided with central heating set up and interacted with the patients. |
