| Gujjars, Bakerwals demand assembly elections after October | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | May 12 The Gujjars and Bakerwal Tribe has appealed to the Election Commission of India to hold J&K Assembly polls after October 2008 as lakhs of Nomads are under seasonal migration to upper reaches of Himalaya. In a 6- point memorandum submitted to N. Gopalaswami, Chief Election Commissioner of India, Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation, has strongly urged for making it possible for nomads of Jammu and Kashmir to have "Mobile Voting System" enabling them to cast their vote "Anywhere" in State in the forthcoming Assembly election. In the memorandum , it has been appealed to Election Commission of India to hold elections to J&K Assembly only after October 2008 when the Tribals shall be in the planes , so as to ensure maximum participation of nomadic Gujjars in the process or to devise such a mechanism as to facilitate the Tribals to cast their votes on higher reaches of J&K, in case the election are held before October. Besides, the memorandum appeals to ECI to make it possible for lakhs of shelter less nomads of Jammu and Kashmir to have "Mobile System of Voting" enabling them to franchise their right "Anywhere" in Jammu and Kashmir in the elections. Further the memorandum urged demonstration of using Electronic Voting Machine may be arranged in tribal languages including Gojri so that they are able to use such machines in a proper manner. |
