| Roop Lal demands 10 lakh for the encounter victims | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 12 Trikuta Group of Colleges today convened a condolence meeting in the premises of Jammu Institute of Ayurveda under the Chairmanship of Dr Roop Lal Sharma, Chairman of the college and senior PDP leader to condole the sad and untimely death of prominent Photojournalist and the Chief Photographer of Daily Excelsior Ashok Sodhi and four others in an encounter yesterday. The principals, staff and the students of the group college observed two minutes silence in respect of the departed soul and prayed for the courage to the bereaved family to bear the irreparable loss. Speaking on the occasion Dr Roop Lal Sharma recalled the dedication and down to earth attitude of Ashok Sodhi who sacrificed his life for the love for his profession. Dr Sharma while terming Sodhi a journalist martyr said that his contribution and sacrifice would be remembered for long and next generation of aspiring journalists must learn that journalists are also soldiers who wield pen or camera instead of a gun. Demanding an ex-gratia relief of Ten Lakhs to each of the deceased in yesterdays encounter Dr Sharma said that government must ensure proper care of the families of the martyrs and look after the injured well. He also demanded Rs 1 Lakh compensation to those who were injured in the firing between militants and the security forces. Dr Sharma also announced that his organization would make a considerable contribution asking the Press Club of Jammu to constitute a Journalists Welfare Fund for working and senior journalists of the state. |
