| ‘Scribes walk on risky ropes’ | | Glowing tributes to Sodhi, peace march taken out | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 12 Journalists in Jammu and Kashmir continue to work in danger zone and there is an immediate need to draw out a comprehensive policy for their social security as they are exposed to the challenges. This was a unanimous voice from the working journalists as glowing tributes were paid to the martyr Ashok Sodhi who laid down his life while performing professional duty in Samba on Sunday. A dozen of speakers who paid their tributes to Sodhi called for some introspection and action on security of the journalists. To pay tributes to veteran photojournalist Ashok Sodhi, a prayer meeting was organized by the Press Club here this evening where a cross section of media persons recalled their association with Sodhi and prayed for the peace to his soul. They also expressed sympathies with the bereaved family. The President of the Press Club of Jammu Manu Srivatsa, who described death of Sodhi as a personal loss for him, announced contributions offered by various individual journalists and organizations for the bereaved family. In befitting tribute to the martyred photojournalist, the Press Club management dedicated the existing library unit in the club premises to the memory of Ashok Sodhi. “The Press Club Library will now be known as Ashok Sodhi Memorial Library”, said Srivatsa. Meanwhile, hundreds of journalists later took out a peace march from the Press Club premises to the Chief Minister’s residence. Sporting black badges on their person, through this peace march the journalists expressed their solidarity with the departed colleague and underlines the challenges in which journalists often have to discharge their duties. A memorandum seeking adequate compensation for Sodhi’s family was handed over to the Chief Minister Advisor. |
