Habitat loss is another threat to birds: Team Jammu
5/22/2019 10:06:54 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, May 22: "Habitat loss is another threat to birds. The number of bird species at risk of losing half their habitat by the year 2080 is over 300. It's estimated that loss of habitat could lead to a 19 to 39 percent decline in various bird species by the year 2030," explained SP City North, Amritpal Singh (IPS) while interacting with students of Dewan Devi Higher Secondary, School Rajpura Mangotrian, here today morning.
The programme was organized as a part of "Save Birds" campaign by Shri Kailakh Jyotish and Vedic Sansthan Trust along with members of Team Jammu during which, Chairman, Team Jammu, Zorawar Singh Jamwal, president of Trust, Mahant Rohit Shastri along with social activists Sunil Sharma and Parveen Sharma also distributed free mud pots and Bhagwat Geeta among the students.
SP City North, Amritpal Singh who was the chief guest on the occasion said that "Climate change is also one of the culprits. As the climate warms, it's predicted that a significant rise in average sea level could eliminate up to 45 percent of our wetlands. And people especially the students must become a part of this important campaign making people aware the need of hour to save birds."
In his address, Chairman, Team Jammu, Zorawar Singh Jamwal, who presided over the function said, "Set up some clean water sources that birds can use for drinking and feeding. Elevated bird baths that are out in the open are a good option, so that predators, especially outdoor cats, can easily be seen. Change the water every other day and scrub out occasionally with a wiry brush so that algae doesn't build up on the bottom of the dish or bowl."
While calling upon the students to motivate their other friends and relatives to become part of Save Birds campaign launched by Mahant Rohit Shastri, Zorawar Singh Jamwal further said that "If you opt to feed birds, make sure the feeders are elevated as another way to protect against cats. You can also put a squirrel protector on the bird feeder. This inverted structure looks a little like an umbrella. Positioned below the feeder but on the pole, it prevents squirrels from getting to the seeds".
Chairman of the School, S C Suri, presented vote of thanks while SDPO, Bakshi Nagar, DySP Amit Sharma, Ashwini Suri, Sr. Journalist Vijay Magotra, Shiv Kumar Sharma and Raj Kumar Sharma were among other dignitaries present on the occasion.
