| CM promises ST status to Paharis | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | May 12 In the poll season where communities and ethnic groups are eager to see the government delivering on promises, the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today committed to the Pahari speaking people that he working to get them included in the Scheduled Tribes. Addressing a party meeting in North Kashmir township of Uri where Pahari speaking people have a significant population, the Chief Minister said that he is actively pursuing their cause. The demand of ST status to the Pahari speaking people, it may be mentioned here, is vehemently opposed by the Gujjars who are already in the list of STs. The Chief Minister said that he would pursue with the central government the demand for according ST status to Pahari speaking people. He said he had held meetings with the union home minister on this issue and would again take it up with him. He said he did not want any tension between ST and non-ST people. |
