| Samba reels under fear, another ultra killed | | Forces redraw operational priorities, combing operations being launched | | Early Times Reporter Samba/Jammu | May 12 A day after the gruesome incident of terror a wave of fear and insecurity is prevailing among the Samba villagers even as the security forces shot down yet another militant who was part of the group which launched attack on Sunday morning. Meanwhile, shocked by the unexpected attack of militants in a strategically important area along the International Border, the security forces are redrawing their operational priorities. Even though the Samba operation is yet to be officially declared as called off, the security forces are planning to do regional mapping of the sensitive areas and launch a massive combing operations to find out presence of militants and possibility of their over-ground sympathizers. Army officers said that the militant killed this morning was more dreadful than those who were killed Sunday. He was carrying a huge bag of ammunition and sophisticated weaponry. A team of Jammu and Kashmir Police and Army was engaged in the combing operation since last evening as there were doubts about the actual number of militants involved in the attack. An unidentified ultra aged around 25 years and carrying no identity card or any other document was killed around 11 this morning. An Army officer, Brigadier Rakesh Chhiber told a group of media persons in Samba that militant slain this morning was more dangerous than two killed on Sunday. He said the security forces were combing the area following reports about the presence of militants in the area and were successful in their operation. However, sources said that since there was no certainty about the total number of militants having sneaked in therefore possibility of some ultras hiding in the villages was not ruled out. A team of EARLY TIMES during its visit to Samba found that the forces were resorting to firing around the bushes to find out if there some ultra hiding. Brigadier Chhiber said that the militant was aiming to strike in a big way and Army formations were probably on his target. 'Search operations are continuing. Soldiers are trying to find whether the militant had any accomplices with him,' he said. The Army officer said the troops were on full alert. The next step, according to army sources, is to conduct mopping-up operations along the entire border belt in the Samba sector to find out if there were more infiltrators than the three already killed in the two operations. 'The idea is to look for the tell-tale signs of the movement of the militants in the area,' a senior army officer said, requesting anonymity. 'A fresh alert has been sounded for the troops guarding the LoC (Line of Control) as militants might attempt to cross over from other areas as well,' he said. The Northern Command of the army that guards the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir has asked its units for greater vigil, the army source said. Instructions have also been issued for greater vigil against terrorist attacks in crowded areas, army camps and key installations, the official said. |
